Craig - Just a quick FYI for you and the readers that the National Angel Org. (non-profit helping make create more, better Angel capital for early-stage companies) released version 1.0 of its Best Practices guide last fall. It is free to download for now and has a full chapter on valuation. It might be a good resource for your readers.

http://www.angelinvestor.ca/Best_Practices.asp

Note also that this is only Version 1.0 of the book. We are actively soliciting community feedback on it to make it even better.

See you at the F&F Monday.

Good catch. I was fiddling with the numbers using a calculator when I was writing the article - I knew I should have done up a spreadsheet. I'll correct things by adjusting the acquisition price.

Hi Craig - well explained but the calculation isn't quite right. In both scenarios the Angel put in $200K; scenario 1 he exited at $1,250,000 which is a 6x return (not 10x); in scenario 2 he exited at $555,556 which is a 2.5x return(not 5x). I guess that this only goes to show how hard it is for an Angel to get a 10x return !
